Happy New Year! Hope that you celebrated responsibly and safely, and of course that 2022 is far, far better than 2020 or 2021.
And a tiny, teensy bit of that is getting TV menswear in order.
Probably not the top of your wish list (or mine) but I’m old and it’s time to vent.
Indeed, I am an old guy, but not so old that I don’t understand that men’s “formal” or dress-up wear isn’t idiotic. Suits are dumb - they can look great, but the entire premise is so antiquated, they rarely feel good for very long and people are much more casual these days, etc.
But … things take time to change. I get that, too. And one thing that I’ve noticed over the last few years is that guys - especially if they are working in the sports field - still wear suits, but they pair them with soft, comfortable shoes. Take, for instance, Field Yates (far left) and Matt Hasselback (second from the right, perfectly bald) in the photo below:
It’s a weird world where guys like Rex Ryan and Randy Moss are dressed more formally than you are, but I don’t HATE this. I don’t love it either, but as someone who has suffered from plantar fasciitis, I understand foot pain and how it is critically important to wear comfortable shoes.
But then - and apologies for the fidelity (or lack thereof) of these photos - I saw this the other day. And folks, we’ve literally gone a bridge too far:
If you don’t see exactly what I’m talking about, let’s zoom in on Nate Burleson:
This appears to be a suit where the pants are joggers. Which is, as you possibly know, a fancy name for sweatpants. And I really think this is getting to the point where we have to just ask…why bother? Just put on a nice shirt and some casual pants and shoes, and let’s just roll, right? This is a LOT of work to look like you’re wearing a suit but you’re not.
And any world where you are wearing a tie and sweatpants in the same outfit is a world that has stopped making even a shred of sense.
(We can talk about how stupid ties are in general in another post.)
Let’s just choose a lane, okay?
