Friday Fun!
The random collection of things I find moderately interesting makes a triumphant return.
Occasionally, I have a deep thought about a subject and that lends itself to a full post - which may or may not reflect these aforementioned deep thoughts. But just as often, I will come across a small story, or a fact, that I think is interesting and I want to share. This is a collection of these things.
Hey, did you know that I like golf? Of course you did. I also love reading, and HENCE, I enjoy reading about golf. Though it is fair to say, not as much as Michael Wolf, aka BamaBearcat. He walked through some of his favorite books on a recent episode of “Office Hours,” a small feature on No Laying Up.
A lot of the books in the above video are NOT books I really have a ton of interest in, but it reminded me about Tom Doak’s “Confidential Guide to Golf Courses,” something he started when he was just getting started in the industry. He basically rates virtually EVERY golf course that one should, and isn’t shy about rating many of them poorly. Each book focuses on a different part of the world, and if they weren’t each like $150, I’d own them all.
Except …this is the part that fascinates me.
Volume 1 is about Great Britain and Ireland. Sure. Go to where golf began.
Volume 2 is about The Americas (Winter Edition) - that’s South America and the Western parts of North America.
Volume 3 is about The Americas (Summer Edition) - this covers the rest of the Americas.
Volume 5 is about Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Anything stick out to you? Yeah, there’s no Volume 4. That’s because it’s still in-progress and will focus on Europe, Africa and the Middle East and is likely to not be completed for some time.
Um, Tom? Why isn’t that Volume 5? Why release Volume 5 before Volume 4? This troubles me, greatly.
With any luck, by this time next week my new iPhone will be here. No, I’m not excited about the fact that it’s TITANIUM! and find it preposterous that this is the basis of their ad campaign. But, like many other folks, the battery on my iPhone 12 Pro - just two years old - is pathetic. What I did not realize is that you can now simply replace your battery. This definitely did not use to be the case.
Also, why on earth does Apple try to get us excited about the new colors the iPhone comes in? If you don’t put a case on your iPhone, you might be a sociopath. And if you do, you have no idea what color your iPhone is. (I literally don’t know if mine is black, grey or something else.)
I wrote a piece last week - well, actually I wrote it two weeks ago and posted it last week - about the pain of being a sports fan. Since I wrote that, my 49ers have lost their first two games of the year. Deebo Samuel and Trent Williams got hurt enough to miss at least one game, and perhaps more. And now QB Brock Purdy is likely to miss this weekends matchup against the Bengals with a concussion. Reminder to myself to NEVER, ever write about anything I care about ever again.
Golf Digest came out with yet another “Top 100” list and if the desire of such a list is to get folks talking, possibly angry, etc., then MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. I have thoughts, enough to populate an entire post. Consider this a tease.
