Another edition of things that occurred to me during the week but didn’t warrant an entire post.
If you care even a little bit - honestly - about the fact that M&Ms changed the shoes of some of their characters and what that means about their gender, I really have no words for you. The only reason this is a story is because some politicians think they can get an extra vote by angering the uninformed. The fact that airspace and “news” organizations devote even a half second to a corporate marketing campaign is … troubling.
There are many, many other problems in this country. This blog tries to avoid politics - mostly because if I start, I won’t stop - but this Substack post today sums up my thoughts pretty well on one of the many things that is broken in this country.
In cheerier news, the Oscar nominations came out this week. It always serves as a good reminder that I haven’t seen nearly enough films this year. For me, the best films I did see were Top Gun: Maverick, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Glass Onion, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Hustle, Turning Red, Barbarian and Say Hey: The Willie Mays Story. Some of these did in fact get nominations! Note - I figured out my favorite films by looking at my Letterboxd account where I keep track of what movies I’ve seen. I’m a guy who needs to keep track of these things, and it’s basically a Goodreads for films. (Note that I did see “The Banshees of Inisherin” and liked it, but didn’t adore it. Kind of shocks me it tied for the lead in nominations, but it’s a good film you should see.)
In the non football sports world, the big ‘scandal’ of the week is “Tee-Gate.” This is apparently from Patrick Reed “throwing” a golf tee at Rory McIlroy on the driving range in Dubai, where a DP World Tour event is happening this week. I’ve seen the video and he casually tosses it at McIlroy’s feet - apparently, it’s a branded tee from his LIV team, which Reed thinks is the source of their disagreement. (McIlroy basically ignored Reed when he came up to him.) The funny part is that Reed doesn’t seem to think it’s the fact that he’s SUED Rory, and the subpoena was served on Christmas Eve, that might make Rory a bit icy towards him.
Rory then clapped back. I post the following to just show a) how misguided Reed is and b) to suggest that whoever chose this photo might not be the number one fan of Reed.
There’s very little evidence that Reed and his wife Justine live in the same reality as the rest of us. While I certainly would like the bank account and golf talent of Patrick Reed, everything about him and his wife suggest they are deeply unhappy, bitter people. #TeamRors
