How Republicans Broke Our Government

I'm a partisan hack, apparently, but I just can't see how the subject line isn't true...

Witness - while George W. Bush was in office, Democrats berated him and said mean things about him, but also passed his budgets (sometimes under forcible duress), confirmed his appointments, etc. Republicans have not only refused to work with Barack Obama, but also had the gall to attack him for not working with them.

Now, Mitt Romney in his current incarnation as a conservative is running for the Republican nomination and had the gall to say that he would try to work with Democrats if elected President:

Asked at a town hall meeting here what he would do to overcome the polarization in politics, Romney said: “My answer is work with the guys across the aisle. Do a bit like Ronald Reagan did. You know, he had lunches with [Democratic House Speaker] Tip O’Neill.”

Then, referencing his four years as governor of overwhelmingly Democratic Massachusetts, Romney said: “I worked with Ted Kennedy, for Pete’s sake. . . . We found some common ground, and I think that has to happen in Washington.”

This has been met with abject horror from Republicans - the same Republicans who pretend to be upset that Barack Obama hasn't worked with them. (Even though he's tried, and they've refused to concede on any of their stances despite being a minority party and unpopular with most of the country.)

It's truly a magical thing where Republicans can attack the President for not working with them, and then attack Presidential hopefuls for saying they'd like to do exactly that. Democrats have their share of blame, but not for this.

Republicans broke our government; they shouldn't be trusted to put it back together.
