The NFL Draft: On The Clock ... Yeah, Everybody Else.
Sigh. I knew this was going to happen. My initial plan was to do a draft, day-by-day, then after the free agency period wrapped up to do a revised overall draft. Well, here we are, almost two full weeks into free agency (not that the 49ers front office seems to have noticed) and I've only gotten half of the first round done.
Here then is a chaotic, not necessarily well thought out "complete" first round. The first 16 picks were already done - and I have grave issues with some of that, not to mention the fact that the Eagles and Dolphins have since swapped picks, so that revision will be coming soon. But before that, here's my first round draft:
PickTeamPlayer, POSSchoolComments1Tennessee TitansLaremy Tunsil, OTOle MissA shut down corner to protect franchise QB Marcus Mariota. 2Cleveland BrownsJared Goff, QBCaliforniaThe Browns finally find an answer to stop the QB merry go-round of the last 20 years.3San Diego ChargersJalen Ramsey, DBFlorida StateWhether he plays cornerback or safety, the Chargers get one of the best players in the draft.4Dallas CowboysJoey Bosa, DL Ohio StateThe Cowboys shore up their defensive line, and find QB, LB and DB help later in the draft. 5Jacksonville Jaguars Vernon Hargreaves, CBFloridaThe Jaguars get a shutdown corner in the first round, find solutions in the front seven in free agency and the rest of the draft.6Baltimore RavensMyles Jack, SS/LBUCLAThe Ravens leap to draft an elite defensive talent, and possibly draft a future star.7San Francisco 49ersCarson Wentz, QBNorth Dakota StateKap forces the teams hand and they take a potential future starting QB to truly start a new era.8Miami DolphinsMackensie Alexander, CB ClemsonMiami plugs its biggest hole, but with a player who does have some questions.9Tampa Bay BuccaneersDeForest Buckner, DLOregonBuckner could easily go earlier, but he's too talented to fall any farther than this.10New York GiantsEzekiel Elliott, RBOhio StateNew York gets an immediate boost with Zeke Elliott, getting new HC Ben McAdoo a huge weapon.11Chicago BearsRonnie Stanley, OTNotre DameChicago still needs help on defense but gets a plug-and-play starter at tackle to help stabilize the offense.12New Orleans SaintsA'Shawn Robinson, DTAlabamaNew Orleans shores up the defense by plugging up the middle and getting tougher and more physical in the process.13Philadelphia EaglesJack Conklin, OTMichigan StateDoug Pederson gets a stabilizing force on the OL to restart the running game and protect his almost comically fragile QB.14Oakland RaidersEli Apple, CBOhio StateThe Raiders begin to shore up the gaping hole of their defensive backfield, and do so with a player with a huge amount of promise from a bigtime program.15Los Angeles RamsLaquon Treadwell, WROle MissWith no immediate solution at QB, the Rams help their passing offense anyway by drafting a legit #1 WR. 16Detroit LionsSheldon Rankins, DTLoiusvilleWhile they could be tempted to go for a pass rusher from Clemson (Dodd or Lawson), they'll instead take a force up the middle17Atlanta FalconsReggie Ragland, LBAlabamaThe Falcons still need to get much better on defense, and Ragland not only fills a huge gap at ILB but should be a force from Day One. 18Indianapolis ColtsTaylor Decker, OTOhio StateKeeping Andrew Luck upright is paramount. Opening up holes for Frank Gore and others would be nice too. Decker is the best tackle left and they haven't remotely addressed it yet in free agency. Seems right.19Buffalo BillsShaq Lawson, DEClemsonLawson almost assuredly won't fall this far but he hasn't been the best choice for each team. But Rex Ryan will want a pass-rushing threat like Lawson and I doubt he'll resist if he's actually there.20New York JetsDarron Lee OLBOhio StateThe Jets add a playmaker on defense at one of the bigger holes at OLB. Todd Bowles 21Washington Native AmericansJarran Reed, DTAlabamaWe're in a Crimson Tide/Buckeyes run here, but it continues with Washington finding its run-stopping defensive lineman. 22Houston TexansCorey Coleman, WRBaylorWith the Texans filling holes at QB and RB, being able to find a WR to pair with Nuk Hopkins, and one who is literally a Texan (born and schooled)...c'mon. This is a no-brainer.23Minnesota VikingsJosh Doctson, WRTCUI think Doctson might well be the second WR taken but it depends on team fit. He's perfect for the Vikings and could really help the offense move forward. Sorry, Cordarelle Patterson.24Cincinnati BengalsWill Fuller, WRNotre DameDear God, it's a WR run! But the Bengals lost two of their top 3 WR in free agency, and Will Fuller can run a go-route for QB Andy Dalton just fine. 25Pittsburgh SteelersWilliam Jackson III, CBHoustonMany Steeler fans point out that the Steelers never take a CB in the 1st round. While they'll be getting last years 2nd round pick in Senquez Goldson back, they need a ton of help. WJ3 is the pick.26Seattle SeahawksLeonard Floyd, OLBGeorgiaThere are so many tempting picks here that could bolster the already strong (and annoying) Seattle defense. While they desperately need OL help, I think the pick here is Floyd (or Spence, or Nkemdiche...)27Green Bay PackersKevin Dodd, DEClemsonHonestly, this is just a Best Player Available pick, but that's a Packers thing to do, and Dodd would help.28Kansas City ChiefsKendall Fuller, CBVirginia TechIt's a bit easy (they lost Sean Shields) but Fuller fills a need and pairs with last years first round CB in Marcus Peters. That Fuller family can play.29New England PatriotsRoger Goodell, COMMNFL HQI still can't believe the Patriots got fined a first round pick for this. 30Arizona CardinalsPaxton Lynch, QBMemphisThis is a perfect landing spot if it happens as Lynch is NOT game ready yet, and spending a few years behind Carson Palmer, learning from Bruce Arians... hard to do better than that.31Carolina PanthersNoah Spence, DEEastern KentuckyThe Panthers might stay away if they are concerned about his character but they can really just go BPA, and Spence has huge upside.32Denver BroncosAndrew Billings, DTBaylorThis team just won a Super Bowl on the basis of its DL and Billings will help offset the loss of Malik Jackson (they don't play the same role, but depth is depth is depth).
Coming Soon: A new, revised draft to make the above look silly.
After the draft, I'll "score" my final mock draft and see how I did.
