Trump vs Clinton. My God, People.
Every time a right-of-center person wants to tell me how horrible President Obama has been for the country, I have to point to the easiest way to dispute that: Who stepped up to try and change things by running for President. By my count, the only guys I can really consider legit candidates - were Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Marco Rubio, Chris Christie and Ted Cruz. While guys like John Kasich and Rand Paul had their fans, but none of those first five could convince people to LIKE them. (I still don't know why Scott Walker dropped out so early, I thought he was the strongest candidate in the field.)
Majority in Congress and Governorships - this is the best of the bunch. Seriously?
Somehow, some way, the Republican voters have decided that Donald Trump is the best answer.

I don't need to get into a discussion of why Trump is so wholly unqualified (for one, he has no plans - nothing concrete - about...anything. He just has opinions, which change frequently.), but he's such a terrible candidate. The media is taken with him because he's so different, but he's remarkably unlikeable.
This is basically the best case scenario for Hillary Clinton, who despite the throngs of Bernie Sanders fans on Twitter and Reddit, will be the Democratic nominee for President. Hillary is incredibly well qualified for the job, but people genuinely dislike her. But nowhere NEAR as much as the amount of people who dislike Donald Trump, a number that hasn't gotten better as people have listened to him more.
I know that because I have friends who vote the Republican ticket, that they'll vote for Trump. Or, to be clearer, would never vote for Hillary Clinton. But I really can't imagine anyone I'm friends with being happy about admitting that they voted for Donald Trump.

It's going to be a really ugly election, because Trump is a truly ugly human and because Clinton is no shrinking violet when it comes to such things either.
But as much as I won't ignore the reality that Donald Trump COULD win the election, there's also a chance that Trump will lose (or Hillary will win) by historic margins, and swing the Senate (and less probably, but within the margin, the House of Representatives as well) dramatically enough to help secure the Supreme Court balance for years to come, and potentially effect real change under her Presidency. (The fact that some Republicans actually think this is a plot by Trump to throw the election to his former pal Clinton seem to discount the ego on this guy, who says the Presidency is an easy job, and definitely thinks he's up to it if it's not beneath him.)
I don't know who else should have run -- Paul Ryan? Mitt Romney, thinking the 3rd time will be a charm? The GOP has the majority in both houses of Congress, a majority of Governorships and they can only muster up ... Donald Trump?
As the kids would say, I can't even.
